Psychology
A safe, supportive space for children, adolescents, and young adults to understand themselves and build the skills to thrive.
Available at:
Understanding minds, nurturing wellbeing
Children and young people experience the world in rich, complex ways — and sometimes that world can feel overwhelming, confusing, or hard to navigate. Our psychologists work alongside children, adolescents, and young adults to support their emotional wellbeing, build self-understanding, and develop practical strategies for everyday life.
Psychology at Therapy for Kids Perth is warm, collaborative, and deeply respectful of each young person's individuality. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all approaches — instead, we take the time to understand your child's unique strengths, experiences, and goals before we do anything else.
We work with families too. Parents and carers are a vital part of the process, and we make sure you feel informed, included, and supported throughout your child's journey with us.
Our psychologists take a neuroaffirming approach — meaning we celebrate neurodivergent minds, avoid deficit-based framing, and work to understand and support your child as they are, not as a checklist of challenges to be overcome.
No referral needed to get started
NDIS, private health, and self-funded families can book directly. A Mental Health Care Plan from a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist is required for Medicare-funded sessions — see the Funding section below for details.

Our psychologists draw on a range of evidence-informed approaches, always tailored to the individual child and their family.
Child-led & family-centred
We follow the child's lead in sessions while keeping families closely involved. You'll always know what we're working on and why, and we'll provide practical strategies you can use at home and school.
Neuroaffirming practice
We celebrate neurodivergent minds and work from a strengths-based perspective. Our goal is never to change who your child is — it's to support them to understand themselves and navigate the world with greater confidence and ease.
Evidence-informed
We draw on a range of approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), play therapy, and trauma-informed practice — always adapted to suit the individual child's age, needs, and learning style.
What can psychology help with?
Our psychologists support children and young people across a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and developmental areas. Every young person is different, and we tailor our approach to suit each individual.
Anxiety & Worry
Supporting children and young people who experience anxiety, worry, phobias, school refusal, or panic. We help young people understand their anxiety and build practical strategies to manage it day to day.
Low Mood & Depression
Working with young people who are experiencing sadness, low motivation, withdrawal, or low self-worth. We provide a safe space to explore difficult feelings and build pathways back to connection and wellbeing.
Social Skills & Friendships
Supporting young people who find social situations challenging, including making and keeping friends, navigating peer conflict, and building confidence in group settings.
Emotional Regulation
Helping children and young people recognise, understand, and manage big emotions — including meltdowns, shutdowns, frustration, anger, and emotional overwhelm.
Trauma & Difficult Experiences
Providing trauma-informed support for children and young people who have experienced challenging life events, loss, or significant stress. We work at the child's pace, in a safe and supportive environment.
School-Related Difficulties
Supporting young people experiencing school refusal, learning-related stress, exam anxiety, difficulties with transitions, or challenges with attention and task completion at school.
Self-Esteem & Identity
Working with young people navigating questions of identity, self-worth, and confidence — including gender identity, cultural identity, and the challenges of adolescence. We provide an affirming, non-judgmental space.
Family & Life Transitions
Supporting children and young people through significant life changes such as family separation, moving schools, bereavement, new siblings, and other transitions that can affect wellbeing.
Neurodivergent Young People
Supporting autistic young people, those with ADHD, and other neurodivergent children in a neuroaffirming way — building self-understanding, coping strategies, and confidence in a world that isn't always designed with them in mind.
What to expect
Starting psychology can feel like a big step. Here's a general guide to how your journey with us typically unfolds — we'll always move at your family's pace.
Get in touch
Book online directly, or contact us to chat about whether psychology is the right fit. If there's a wait for your preferred location, you're welcome to join our waitlist and we'll be in touch as soon as a space becomes available.
Initial consultation
Your first session is a relaxed, get-to-know-you conversation. We'll talk with you and your child (in an age-appropriate way) about what's been going on, what you're hoping for, and how we might best support your family.
Setting goals together
We collaborate with you, and where appropriate your child, to identify meaningful goals. These might relate to managing anxiety, building friendships, improving self-confidence, or navigating daily life more comfortably.
Therapy sessions
Sessions are tailored to your child's age, interests, and needs. We use a range of approaches — play-based activities, creative tools, structured strategies — always in a warm and supportive environment.
Supporting the whole family
With your consent, we also work with parents, carers, and schools to ensure everyone around your child can support them consistently. Regular reviews keep everyone informed and goals on track.
Looking for a psychological assessment?
We offer dedicated assessments for ADHD, autism, cognitive development, and functional capacity. These are separate from psychology therapy sessions — visit our Assessments page to find out more.
How to access psychology
We work with a range of funding types to make psychology as accessible as possible for your family. Not sure which applies to you? Get in touch and we'll help.
NDIS Participants
Therapy for Kids Perth is an NDIS Registered Provider. We welcome self-managed, plan-managed, and agency-managed participants. No referral is required to get started.
Mental Health Care Plan
A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist provides access to Medicare-rebated psychology sessions. Your GP can prepare a plan following a longer mental health assessment appointment.
Under a MHCP, young people may access up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a registered or endorsed psychologist. A referral is required before your first session.
Private Health Insurance
Many private health funds provide rebates for psychology under extras cover. Coverage varies depending on your fund and policy level. We recommend checking with your fund before booking.
Self-Funded (Private Pay)
No referral required. Self-funded appointments are available for all psychology services. Please contact us for our current session fees.
Medicare information is provided as a general guide only. Eligibility criteria, session limits, and referral requirements may change. Please refer to MBS Online or speak with your GP for the most current information. A gap payment may apply — our team can provide details when you enquire.
