Therapy for Kids Perth accepts Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) claims through the Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA) for eligible clients. Here's what you need to know before booking.

About MVA Claims

Accessing therapy after a motor vehicle accident

If a child or young person has been injured in a motor vehicle accident in Western Australia, they may be entitled to funded allied health services through the Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA). ICWA administers Western Australia's Compulsory Third Party (CTP) motor injury insurance scheme and can cover the cost of reasonable and necessary treatment to support recovery.

Therapy for Kids Perth provides occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, and physiotherapy to eligible ICWA claimants. ICWA pays fees in accordance with the WorkCover WA scale of fees. Therapy for Kids Perth follows the WorkCover WA scale of fees for MVA-funded sessions, so there is no gap payment for eligible clients.

Before we can begin treatment, there are two requirements that must be in place: an approved ICWA claim with a treatment number issued by your claims officer, and a GP referral. Both must be confirmed before your first appointment with us.

Who is ICWA?

The Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA) is the statutory body that manages WA's motor injury insurance scheme. All registered WA vehicles carry CTP insurance, which means anyone injured in a motor vehicle accident on a WA road may be eligible for funded treatment — regardless of who caused the accident. For more information visit icwa.wa.gov.au

No gap payment

Therapy for Kids Perth follows the WorkCover WA scale of fees for all MVA-funded sessions. There is no gap payment for eligible clients — ICWA is billed directly for approved services.

Before You Book

What we need before treatment begins

There are two requirements that must be in place before we can commence MVA-funded treatment at Therapy for Kids Perth. Both must be confirmed prior to your first appointment.

1

Approved ICWA claim with a treatment number

Your ICWA claim must be approved and a treatment number issued by your ICWA claims officer before commencing treatment. The treatment number is how we bill ICWA directly for your sessions. Without an approved claim and treatment number, treatment cannot proceed under MVA funding. If you have not yet submitted a claim, visit icwa.wa.gov.au or contact ICWA on 1800 643 338.

2

GP referral

A referral from your GP is required before commencing any MVA-funded service at Therapy for Kids Perth — this applies to all disciplines including occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, and physiotherapy. The referral should specify the type of treatment required and is valid for a single course of treatment. Please bring your GP referral to your first appointment or send it to us in advance.

Not sure if your claim has been approved? Contact your ICWA claims officer directly — their details are on any correspondence you have received from ICWA. If you haven't yet made a claim, we recommend doing so as soon as possible after the accident. You can also get in touch with our team and we can help guide you through what's needed before booking.

Getting Started

How to access MVA-funded therapy

Here's a step-by-step guide to accessing allied health services at Therapy for Kids Perth under your MVA claim.

Report the accident to ICWA

Submit a crash report to ICWA as soon as possible after the accident at icwa.wa.gov.au. If a child is injured, their parent or guardian must notify ICWA on their behalf. Early reporting is recommended as it supports faster claim approval.

Wait for your claim to be approved

ICWA will assess your claim and assign a claims officer. Your claims officer will advise which treatments are approved and will issue a treatment number. Most payments can only be made once a claim has been approved — do not book treatment with us until you have received your treatment number.

See your GP for a referral

Visit your GP to have all injuries documented and to obtain a referral for the allied health services you require. Bring your ICWA claim number to this appointment. The referral should specify the type of treatment and is valid for a single course of treatment up to 12 months.

Contact Therapy for Kids Perth

Once your claim is approved and your GP referral is in hand, contact us to book your first appointment. Please have your treatment number, ICWA claim number, and GP referral ready. Our admin team will confirm availability and walk you through the next steps.

Attend your appointment

Bring your treatment number or digital claiming card to your appointment — this allows us to bill ICWA directly via HICAPS at the time of your session. Please also bring your GP referral if you haven't already sent it to us. There is no gap payment — we bill ICWA directly for all approved services.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Here are the questions families most often ask us about accessing therapy under an MVA claim.

Can we start treatment before the claim is approved?

No. At Therapy for Kids Perth, we require an approved ICWA claim with a treatment number before commencing MVA-funded treatment. Without an approved claim, treatment cannot be billed to ICWA.

ICWA does note that early treatment is recommended and that if treatment is urgent, you can seek treatment immediately and apply for reimbursement later. However, this would mean paying out of pocket initially. If you are in this situation, please get in touch and we can discuss your options.

Who do I contact at ICWA to get my claim approved?

To make a motor injury claim, visit icwa.wa.gov.au and submit a crash report. ICWA will then assign a claims officer to your case, who will advise which treatments are approved. You can also call ICWA on 1800 643 338 (toll-free within WA, outside the Perth metro area) or (08) 9264 3333.

Will there be any out-of-pocket costs?

Therapy for Kids Perth follows the WorkCover WA scale of fees for MVA-funded sessions. There is no gap payment for eligible clients — we bill ICWA directly for all approved services.

What should the GP referral include?

Your GP referral should specify the type of allied health treatment required (e.g. occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, or physiotherapy), reference the motor vehicle accident, and include your GP's provider details. The referral is valid for a single course of treatment. If you're unsure what to ask for, your GP should be familiar with ICWA referral requirements.

Can a child make an MVA claim?

Yes. If a child is injured in a motor vehicle accident, their parent or guardian must notify ICWA on their behalf and submit a crash report. The same requirements apply — an approved claim with a treatment number and a GP referral must be in place before treatment can commence at Therapy for Kids Perth.

How long after the accident can a claim be made?

In most cases, you have three years from the date of the accident to lodge a claim with ICWA. However, earlier is always better — injuries are easier to document and treat closer to the time of the accident. We recommend contacting ICWA as soon as possible after the accident.

Have your claim approved? We're ready when you are.

Once your ICWA claim is approved and you have your GP referral, get in touch and we'll get your child's first appointment booked.
